Poulton - The Abbey Habit Poulton in Cheshire was once home to a small community of Cistercian monks, who founded an Abbey on the banks of the River Dee on the Welsh border. After only 60 years, the monks grew tired of continued problems with the Welsh and moved to a new site in Staffordshire. The Poulton Research Project have been investigating the history of the Abbey for 15 years, with some great results – a blocked up stone staircase leading into the ground on a site named ‘Poulton Hall’ on a 17th century estate map, and just a short distance away, an early chapel has been located. Could ‘Poulton Hall’ be the former Abbey, re-used as a Monastic Grange and manor house? Time Team have just three days to find out....
